June 22. Aeroflot intends to downsize staff, since during the crisis the air carrier does not need 30% of its personnel, the company’s executives said Saturday. “Preparations are being made to cut staff, but we’ll try to make it as delicate as possible,” Aeroflot CEO Vitaly Saveliev said. “Aeroflot is about 30% overstaffed at the moment,” the air company’s board member Sergey Aleksashenko added. Currently, Aeroflot, which has been making attempts to cut costs amid falling shipment volumes, has a headcount of about 15,000. According to Aleksashenko, pilots of Soviet airliners could be downsized. Earlier, Aeroflot decided to phase out operations using Tu-154s and Tu-134 jets whose fuel efficiency lags behind that of foreign airplanes, making Airbus and Boeing planes the backbone of its fleet. “Those who can fly SU-made aircraft either had to pass retraining courses or, sorry, ship out,” Aleksashenko said. Saveliev said that he also intends to reduce the air company’s list of executives that presently number 23 persons.
