July 2. Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has proposed his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev to meet in Ashgabat in mid-September, for the first time after Russia stopped purchasing Turkmen gas. The relations between Turkmenistan, the largest gas exporter in Central Asia, and the Russian Federation, which purchases all free Turkmen gas, took a turn for the worse after an explosion on the pipeline on April 9. Ashgabat accused Gazprom, which is interested in selling in-house gas to the West amid lower global prices and weaker demand. The parties have not yet negotiated the new supply terms. The Turkmen agency reported Wednesday that the day before in a telephone conversation the two presidents confirmed “mutual willingness to boost strategic partnership” and discussed “priority areas of constructive interaction, first and foremost, energy relations”.
